Font vs Laporta: The Election-Season Showdown
Font argues that Laporta talks more than he acts as Barcelona's election approaches.
Victor Font, one of Barcelona's fiercest opponents of Joan Laporta ahead of the March 15 election, says the Catalan club's president still maintains ties with Real Madrid chief Florentino Pérez, despite a claim two weeks earlier that relations between the two clubs are currently broken.
Font said in a press conference on Friday that spending Laporta's entire term alongside Pérez was unprecedented, noting Pérez helped with financial guarantees and economic levers, and that the facts about severing ties should be made clear.
He added that during the ceremonial platform at the Spanish Super Cup, gifts were exchanged, raising questions about what kind of severed ties this is; he believes officially Barcelona remains part of the Super League and that deeds, not words, need to be shown.
The Blaugrana had beaten the royal Madrid 3-2 in the Spanish Super Cup final, played at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Font, in his campaign, pledges to end what he calls a one-voice policy at Barcelona, directing sharp criticisms at Laporta's administration.
Punchline 1: If politics were football, Font would demand extra time just to talk to the ref.
Punchline 2: Laporta would autograph a manifesto and still claim the match was won by the weather.
