Four Attempts, One Break: Can Egypt Finally Beat Benin?
4 January 2026
Egypt are chasing a breakthrough against West Africa as they prepare to meet Benin in the AFCON 2025 Round of 16 in Morocco.
The Pharaohs have not beaten West African sides in their last four meetings, with all four results ending in draws.
Their last victory over a West African opponent came with a 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau in the 2021 group stage, the only win in seven games against West Africa since then (five draws, one defeat).
Egypt have not lost in regular time or extra time in their last five matches against West Africa (one win, four draws); their most recent defeat was 0-1 to Nigeria in the opening group game of 2021.
No Defeat vs Benin Yet
Historically, Egypt has never lost to Benin; in their four meetings, Egypt won three and drew once, with the 2010 AFCON fixture a 2-0 victory for Egypt as the latest clash.
As for the knockout, the winner will face the quarterfinal winner of Ivory Coast vs Burkina Faso.
Egypt had qualified to the knockout stage by topping Group B with seven points, while Benin advanced as third in Group D with three points.
