From Madrid's Prodigy to MLS Dreams: Reguilón Nears Messi-Linked Move to Inter Miami
3 octobre 2025

A Promising Start
Sergio Reguilón, the Spanish left-back developed at Real Madrid, is nearing a move to Major League Soccer via Inter Miami, the club already home to Lionel Messi.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed Inter Miami’s surprise approach to the former Tottenham defender, who has been without a club since July.
Reguilón’s path began in Real Madrid’s academy, where he broke through in 2018–2019 and established himself on the left flank with pace and attacking instincts.
When Zidane returned in 2019, the coach favored experienced players, limiting Reguilón’s chances. He went on loan to Sevilla in 2019, where he shone and helped Sevilla win the Europa League in 2019–2020.
In 2020 Madrid sold Reguilón to Tottenham at Mourinho’s request, with Tottenham holding an option to buy. The deal underscored how tactical fit and managerial choices shape a player’s career.
In England, Reguilón thrived on the left, forming a productive partnership with Son Heung-min and delivering crosses while improving defensively under Mourinho. After Mourinho’s exit, later coaches shifted to a 3–4–3 that reduced his game time, leading to loan spells at Atlético Madrid and Manchester United as he pursued form.
Despite ups and downs, Reguilón’s early potential suggested a modern, attacking full-back capable of combining skill with discipline. His time at Madrid and Sevilla left fans hopeful a settled career would follow.
A Career Pivot
Reguilón’s move to Tottenham in 2020 marked a high point, with Mourinho relying on him as a regular starter and pairing him with Son to create width. But after Mourinho’s sacking in 2021, subsequent managers favored other wing-backs in different systems, reducing Reguilón’s minutes and leading to further loans as he chased form.
Across his career, Reguilón has won a handful of trophies: a Club World Cup with Real Madrid in 2018 and the Europa League with Sevilla in 2019–2020, a highlight that helped raise his market value. He has also featured in Tottenham’s European campaigns in later seasons.
The Inter Miami pursuit comes as the club continues to build around Messi, aiming to raise MLS’s profile with a high-caliber signing and a distinctive project in the United States.
As of October 3, 2025, negotiations are ongoing, with Reguilón weighing Miami’s offer among several options.
Punchline 1: If Reguilón signs for Inter Miami, the left flank will be so hot that even the ball will need sunscreen. Punchline 2: With Messi in town, Reguilón’s crosses might finally have a better chance of hitting the target than my punchlines ever do.
