Haaland's historic night as City rout Dortmund
Manchester City’s Norwegian sensation Erling Haaland delivered a performance that etched his name into European history, guiding City to a 4-1 win over Borussia Dortmund at the Etihad.
The 25-year-old striker added his 18th goal of the season, extending a scoring run that has him atop Europe’s charts and reinforcing his status as a scoring machine.
His second strike in City’s four-goal burst against his former club set a Champions League record that had not been matched before in the competition's history.
Haaland now has goals in five consecutive Champions League matches for three different clubs, a streak that began last season with a brace against Real Madrid and continued this season against Napoli, Monaco, and Villarreal before Dortmund.
He has previously achieved similar feats with Dortmund and RB Salzburg, and this latest tally brings his CL total to 54 goals in 52 appearances, placing him among the all-time top scorers of the competition.
He sits tenth in the all-time list, three behind Thomas Muller, with Cristiano Ronaldo leading on 141 and Lionel Messi on 129.
Haaland's value goes beyond goals
Teammate Jeremy Doku argued that Haaland’s impact extends far beyond scoring and assists; he is hugely important for the group. After the win, Doku noted City had two wins this week and were aiming for a third against Liverpool — a run that would make for a perfect week before the international break.
Haaland now eyes another major test in the English league when City host Liverpool in a much-anticipated clash next Sunday. The Norwegian has 13 league goals this season, nine behind his total from last season, but he has achieved this in just 10 games instead of 31.
Since joining City in 2022, Haaland has 98 goals in 107 appearances across all competitions, a tally that places him among Premier League greats and moves him closer to the century mark in the league alone. He is now two shy of the Premier League hundred club and five behind Ronaldo's all-time tally in the competition.
All these numbers point to a footballing phenomenon not seen in years, with Haaland transcending mere goal counts and redefining the pace of scoring in European football.
Guardiola on Haaland
Guardiola admitted he was surprised by the latest mark, saying he often learns of records only after they happen and that Haaland deserves every bit of praise. He added that surrounding Haaland with quality players makes life easier for any striker.
The City boss also highlighted the continued strength of the campaign, noting City’s 4-1 victory over Dortmund in the group stage as Foden, Haaland, and Rayan Cherki all contributing (Foden 22 and 57, Haaland 29, Cherki 90+1; Dortmund’s 72nd-minute goal by Valdemar Anton).
City moved to 10 points in the group, while Dortmund stood at seven. This result underscored City’s dominance in the section as they press toward knockout rounds.
