Hakimi on the Verge of a Historic Moroccan Milestone
Achraf Hakimi, the Paris Saint‑Germain star, is nearing a historic milestone for Morocco as he continues to star for the Atlas Lions.
The Atlas Lions drew 1-1 with Ecuador on Friday in a friendly played at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, as part of preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
Ecuador opened the scoring in the 48th minute when Gonzalo Plata finished a fine one‑two with Valencia, firing home from inside the box.
The Moroccans hit back in the 59th minute when Gonzalo Plata committed a foul inside the box on Nayel Al‑Aynaoui, and the referee awarded a penalty, converted by Al‑Aynaoui in the 62nd minute.
Hakimi came on for the match, bringing his international tally to 94 appearances for the Atlas Lions.
Hakimi had already drawn level with the late Ahmed Faras, moving closer to a new record.
Noureddine Nebat remains the most capped Moroccan player with 115 appearances, and Hakimi is now on the brink of matching or surpassing him.
Hakimi will turn 28 next month, giving him a strong chance to become the most capped Moroccan player, especially with the Atlas Lions’ busy international schedule ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Remarkably, Hakimi has 94 caps for Morocco, with 11 goals and 17 assists.
