Coutinho bids farewell to Vasco after halftime substitution
Brazilian star Felipe Coutinho confirmed his departure from Vasco da Gama, the club where he grew up, in an emotional social-media post.
The 33-year-old had rejoined the Brazilian side on a permanent deal last year after a brief loan spell with Aston Villa, and he seemed set to remain with the team longer.
However, the former Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder has lately endured jeers from supporters, including during Vasco’s Carioca Cup quarter‑final shootout win over Volta Redonda.
Coutinho was substituted at halftime and chose not to return to the bench to support his teammates in the second half.
Now he has confirmed he will not wear Vasco’s jersey again, acknowledging that the time has come to leave the club.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, he wrote that he had thought long and hard about writing this, but out of respect and affection for the fans and for this club, he felt he had to speak from the heart.
“I returned to Vasco because I love this club and everything it stands for. Wearing this shirt was one of the most important decisions of my life. In every training session and in every match, I gave my all,” he wrote, stressing that there was no lack of dedication or will.
He added that it is incredibly hard to be judged by countless people for something that does not reflect his character and that he would never insult the fans, his teammates, or Vasco.
As he walked toward the dressing room, he felt that his time at the club had ended and that he could no longer prioritize his mental health, a reality that pains him deeply.
Coutinho began his Vasco journey strongly, scoring five goals and providing three assists in 26 matches during his initial loan spell, helping the team finish 13th in Brazil’s top flight.
This season he has seven goals in 28 appearances, a form that makes the prospect of terminating the contract a shock for the club.
He concluded: “I am mentally exhausted. I have always been reserved, so it is not easy to say this here, but I must be honest.”
He stressed that his relationship with Vasco will remain lifelong: “Vasco will stay in my heart, forever.”
The Daily Mail later reported that Vasco had not issued an official statement about Coutinho’s departure.

In the end, the chapter closes with a note that echoes beyond the locker room: a player leaves not just a club, but a memory that fans will carry long after the final whistle.
Punchline time: 1) If loyalty were a transfer, Coutinho would have requested more minutes and a side of patience. 2) And if mental health were a contract clause, Vasco might have negotiated a longer leave of absence—because sometimes the best loan is to yourself.
