Controversy Surrounds Spain-Egypt Friendly

Lamine Yamal, Barcelona star and Spain's national team standout, voiced anger at La Roja fans during the friendly against Egypt held last night, as teams prepared for the 2026 World Cup.

Spain failed to win, settling for a goalless draw with Egypt, who defended stoutly and held firm until the final whistle, leaving both sides with a positive result ahead of the World Cup.

Yet the match was also marked by moments described as disgraceful by the Spanish press, as some Spanish supporters hurled anti-Islam chants, chanting "Whoever doesn’t jump is Muslim" on more than one occasion.

The Spanish Football Federation, Espanyol, and the government condemned the actions and opened investigations to hold the offenders accountable.

Yamal published a message on his social media accounts, expressing anger at those who shouted the chants and calling them "ignorant" and "racist."

Substituted at halftime, Yamal said: "I am Muslim, thanks to God; yesterday in the stadium I heard chants: 'Whoever doesn’t jump is Muslim.' I know these chants were directed at the opposing team, not at me personally, but as a Muslim, they are disrespectful and unacceptable."

Football should be about enjoyment and support, not denigrating people for their identity or beliefs. Yamal also thanked the fans who came to support the team and said they would meet again at the World Cup.

Two final notes: "If ignorance counted as a sport, those chants would be the season’s MVPs—thanks for nothing, ignorance." And: "Football is for everyone—let’s keep the game inclusive, not exclusive to a loud chant that misses the point of the sport."
