Isak Breaks the Drought with a Premier League Finish
Swedish striker Alexander Isak admitted he had long known his first Liverpool goal in the Premier League would come soon, after he opened the scoring in a valuable 2-0 win over West Ham United on Saturday night.
He ended his goalless spell in the 60th minute when he chased a cross and guided it home with a composed touch, a reminder of the value Liverpool paid (£125 million) to land him from Newcastle United last summer in a British record deal.
The Swedish international had battled injuries and form fluctuations since arriving at Anfield, and while he had scored in the League Cup against Southampton last September, his first Premier League goal finally arrived at the end of November.
Isak spoke to Sky Sports after the match, saying: "I've known for a long time that the goal would come. I've been trying to get back to my best. I'm still on the way, but I'm very happy to have scored this goal."
"The best feeling today is that we won. That is the most important thing for lifting the team's spirits. And as a forward, scoring helps me a lot too."
Isak added: "We must build on this victory without overdoing it: we must use this win the right way, but stay humble. We must stay focused and keep pushing to maintain the momentum."
Liverpool approached the game with a tough run of three straight defeats and nine losses in the last 12 matches in all competitions, but the win over West Ham steadied the ship and lifted them to eighth, just two points off the top four.
The Reds now face two important fixtures: at home to Sunderland on Wednesday, then a tricky trip to Leeds United on Saturday.
Isak concluded: "We knew returning to winning ways would be hard after a run of poor results. I’m happy with the win and happy I contributed with a goal."
Punchline 1: If scoring keeps climbing like this, Liverpool may need a bigger trophy cabinet—and a bigger bank balance to cover the celebrations.
Punchline 2: Isak’s goal is so timely that even the coffee machine in the tunnel must be asking for autographs—goals brewing at Anfield, one cup at a time.
