Italy’s Super Cup Rewinds: Old Format Returns, No Saudi Hosts Ahead
22 December 2025
Back to the old format?
Ezio Simonielli, head of Serie A, acknowledged the league could drop the four-team Super Cup format for the next edition. A move that would spare fans from yet another calendar puzzle, albeit with fewer dramatic crossovers.
Four teams, Saudi hosting, and the plan ahead
The revamped Super Cup currently features four teams—the league champion and runner‑up alongside the Coppa Italia winner and runner‑up—and has been staged in Saudi Arabia for a third consecutive year. The tournament runs from December 18 to 22 and is broadcast exclusively on the Eight app.
Simonielli noted that the next edition will not be held in Saudi Arabia, though reports linked this to the Asia Cup scheduled for early January 2027. He stressed the collaboration with Saudi Arabia has gone well, but the contract does not require a fixed final location or even multiple games, so the format could change again.
The title, as proposed, would be decided between the league champion and the Coppa Italia winner.
Punchline: If calendars had a sniper on standby, this plan would be a headshot—boom, season adjusted with precision.
Punchline 2: And if you think that was simple, wait until next year when the trophy decides to teleport again—forty winks, one more plot twist, and still zero extra hours.
