Keeper in the Balance
Flick, the Barcelona coach, declared that Joan Garcia is the first-choice goalkeeper, noting that the decision about Marc-Andre ter Stegen's Barça future rests with the goalkeeper himself.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Copa del Rey Round of 32 meeting with Guadalajara, he emphasized that the upcoming game must be won, Barca are the favorites but must prove it on the pitch. He highlighted the importance of mentality, starting approach, and positioning as the foundation of the match.
He added that the starter tomorrow would be decided after a 24-hour review since today was a rest day.
He continued praising Ter Stegen as an excellent keeper, noting that Barcelona benefits from having three high-level goalkeepers. He reiterated that Garcia is number one and that Chesney has had a superb season, with his stability valued both on the pitch and in the locker room.
Flick also stated that Joan Garcia will get a rest tomorrow because the decision could not be made today. They will wait until tomorrow to talk with the players.
Rotation and the Cup Clash
On rotation, he suggested that a major rotation could happen, but they will wait until tomorrow. Lewandowski might be available as well, having trained today individually. The key remains to win.
On Ter Stegen staying in the squad despite limited minutes, Flick framed it as Ter Stegen's decision and expressed respect for Marc's status as a top player who should decide his own situation.
Asked about Madrid's ongoing discussions about referees, Flick responded that referees are a crucial part of the game and everyone makes mistakes. The focus should be on improving the team, not piling pressure on referees; that is not his approach.
