Laporta Draws the Line: Messi’s Barcelona Return Still Out of Reach
20 November 2025
Laporta blocks Messi's Barca return
Laporta, the president of Barcelona, has made up his mind about bringing back Argentine Lionel Messi, Inter Miami's captain, to Spotify Camp Nou once again.
Messi left Barcelona in the summer of 2021, shortly after Laporta’s election, citing insufficient funds to register him and offer a new contract.
In statements published by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on X, Laporta explained that Messi’s return as a Barca player is far from reality and that he is currently under contract with Inter Miami.
He added that the club is building a present-and-future project, so it seems complex, and living in the past while aiming to move forward would be difficult.
Golden journey
Messi's Barcelona career was one of the most remarkable runs in football history, forging a legend inside Camp Nou and across the sport.
From his first appearance for the first team in 2004 to his departure in summer 2021, Messi gave everything for one club, amassing staggering numbers and feats that made him a timeless symbol in Barcelona's history.
In 778 matches for the club, he scored 672 goals and created 303 assists, becoming the most prolific contributor to a single club in football history.
Not only a scorer, Messi was an exceptional playmaker, capable of building attacks, creating chances, and finishing them, a blend that defined his footballing identity at the club.
He led Barcelona to a golden era, contributing to four Champions League titles, ten La Liga crowns, plus the Club World Cup, Copa del Rey, and European and Spanish Super Cups.
With every season, he didn’t just maintain his level; he raised the bar for what one player could achieve within a team.
With Guardiola’s golden generation, Messi reached the peak of glory, becoming the keystone of a historic side that delivered one of football’s greatest styles.
During that era, he was the archetype of a false nine, a player who unsettled defenders with deep movements and created an era of entertaining football that made Barcelona a global reference.
Even as coaches and generations changed, Messi remained the constant, the savior, and the leader relied on in tough times, his importance increasing in the final years before his departure, carrying the team on his shoulders as the primary creative force.
Perhaps Messi’s departure left a huge void, not only within the squad but in fans’ hearts who lived through the best moments; despite the emotional ending, his legacy at Barcelona is bigger than numbers.
Life after Barcelona
Messi’s exit from Barça in the summer of 2021 marked a major turning point in his career, forced to leave due to the club’s crippling financial crisis.
Although deeply tied to Blaugrana, he sought new challenges with Paris Saint-Germain, embarking on a journey quite different from the two decades spent at Camp Nou.
With PSG, Messi faced a difficult adaptation in his first season, due to the changed tactical environment and the pressure of joining a squad that also included Neymar and Mbappé.
Nevertheless, the Argentine star produced a second season that was more mature and influential, contributing goals and decisive assists and showing moments of his refined craft.
Despite criticism, particularly for European disappointments, Messi won Ligue 1 and captained Argentina to the 2022 World Cup in one of the greatest moments of his career.
Yet the Parisian surroundings weren’t ideal for him emotionally or publicly, so he charted a new course outside Europe, this time in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami in 2023.
That move proved positive, as Messi found a calm environment and a favorable setting to recharge after years of European pressure.
With Inter Miami, Messi rekindled American soccer fans’ passion and helped the club win its first trophy in its history via the Leagues Cup, delivering dazzling football.
He also drew unprecedented global attention to MLS, redefining the star’s role outside Europe with a blend of elegant play and enormous market value.
Thus, Messi’s journey after Barcelona shows he remains able to influence wherever he goes, keeping his football magic alive and writing new chapters in his legendary career both in Europe and beyond.
Punchline 1: If Messi’s career keeps growing, Barca might need a bigger stadium just to house the memories—and maybe the mortgage paperwork too.
Punchline 2: And if you think this saga is over, relax—this is football; there’s always a new patch in the patch notes for Messi’s magic.
