The Impossible Run: Jack Vaint’s Himalayan Odyssey

In an inspiring display of sheer determination, 32-year-old Liverpool supporter Jack Vaint completed a 3,666-kilometer journey across India despite an inoperable brain tumor. The Athletic reports that his diagnosis came in March 2019, with doctors telling him survival beyond 40 would be uncertain. Yet he defied expectations, finishing the challenge six days early, running roughly 50 kilometers per day for 7 to 9 hours and facing pain, fatigue, and injuries with stubborn grit.

The trek began in northern India, starting from the base in the Himalayas at an altitude around 12,000 meters, and was supported by a team including former Liverpool performance coach Jordan Fireklov who assisted with massage along busy roads. Three video journalists and Daniel Robinson, a photographer and drone operator, captured the journey while a nutritionist ensured his daily intake reached 5,000 to 6,000 calories.

Vaint recalled to The Athletic that some days the food was harder than the running. The group traveled in Camber vans, taking turns running beside him to sustain morale. On day eight, while crossing high Himalayan passes above 5,000 meters, a message of support arrived from Liverpool coach Arne Slot, underscoring how deeply the club’s network believed in him.

"People like you define what this club stands for," Slot wrote, emphasizing collective pride and gratitude as Vaint pressed on. A Liverpool supporter since age five, Vaint had spent a significant portion of his youth following the team around Europe, including attending three Champions League finals.

The support extended to former and current players, including Federico Chiesa and John Barnes, whose encouragement proved pivotal during moments when his body threatened to crumble. Before the challenge, Vaint lived in Melbourne, Australia, where a brain tumor diagnosis followed a seizure on a bicycle and hospitalization at Royal Melbourne Hospital. He had previously led a lifestyle heavy on alcohol, smoking, and excess weight, until doctors urged a healthier path—organic plant-based nutrition, meditation, and abstinence from alcohol—which he adopted wholeheartedly.

After the diagnosis, he embarked on a four-month journey across the Americas and Asia, with India revealing the benefits of yoga, meditation, and breathwork. Returning home, he started running again, gradually progressing to longer distances and using his fundraising to support cancer charities, including a 650-kilometer coastal run in South Africa over 14 days as preparation for India.

The six months before the India challenge were the toughest: balancing a startup job with six-day weekly training and securing roughly £80,000 in funding. Reflecting on the diagnosis, Vaint said he doesn’t view himself as extraordinary, simply choosing to act positively rather than dwell on the past. He has faced bouts of depression in recent years but credits meditation, gratitude, and family support for his resilience. Now based in Cape Town with his girlfriend, he recognizes the possibility of brain surgery in 2026, but lives in the moment, celebrating his life and achievement with loved ones.

His core message is simple: the only thing within our control is our reaction, and turning hardship into a source of inspiration can guide others facing similar battles. He hopes to show brain tumor and cancer patients that this is not the end, and that strength can emerge from adversity. Punchlines optional for a lighter finish: if running solves problems, he’s filed a 26.2-mile complaint about the weather. And if courage comes in kilometers, he’s just filed a full mile of it with a map and a smile.
