Lyon stayed one point behind Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1 after a 1-0 victory away at Lille on Sunday, in matchweek six.
The win was secured by the English newcomer Tyler Morton, who headed home the decisive goal after 13 minutes.
Lyon rose to 15 points in second place, level on goal difference with PSG, who had beaten Auxerre 2-0 on Saturday.
The Portuguese coach Paulo Fonseca’s side continued their positive run, recording a sixth win in seven games (they had lost 1-3 to Rennes in week four).
Lille suffered their second straight defeat and sit on 10 points in sixth in the Ligue 1 table.
The moment of decision arrived in the 13th minute when Morton headed in from a cross by Argentinian Nicolas Tagliafico after a move that started with a Liverpool connection.
Meanwhile, Nice’s winless run extended as they were held to a 1-1 draw by hosts Paris FC.
Nice went ahead through Sofiane Diop in the 40th minute, but substitute Jean-Philippe Krasso equalised with a late penalty in the 88th.
That was Nice’s third consecutive winless game, following defeats to Brest (1-4 in the league) and Roma (1-2 in the Europa League).
Nice have only two wins this season, standing on seven points in 11th, behind PSG on goal difference.
Nevertheless, Nice remain undefeated at home for seven straight matches (five wins, two draws).
They travel for a midweek Europa League clash at Fenerbahce on Thursday, seeking their first win, before two tough league fixtures against Monaco and Lyon.
Stade Brest managed a second win of the week by defeating Angers 2-0, with Rémi Labou-Lascari scoring in the 26th minute and Román Del Castillo converting a penalty in the 32nd.
That result lifted Brest to seven points in ninth, while Angers stayed on five points in the relegation zone, three points behind Metz, who drew 0-0 with Le Havre, 15th in the standings.
