Madrid's Bold Summer Move: Is Nico Schlotterbeck the Missing Piece?
21 February 2026
Summer Target Plans
Real Madrid plans to sign at least one central defender in the upcoming summer window. With David Alaba's exit likely and Antonio Rüdiger's future unclear, reinforcements are needed.
Schlotterbeck Emerges as a Top Candidate
In recent months Madrid has tracked several high-profile defenders, including Marc Guehi, who was snapped up by Manchester City, and Dayot Upamecano, who ended up renewing with Bayern. Nico Schlotterbeck of Borussia Dortmund has now risen as the leading candidate.
According to AS, Madrid sees Schlotterbeck as a suitable option for the summer, with about €50 million reportedly enough to persuade Dortmund, whose contract runs until 2027.
Acquiring Schlotterbeck would represent a surprise move given Madrid's recent transfer strategy, but Dortmund’s defender could be a rare opportunity not to be missed.
Barcelona and Bayern as Barriers
Barcelona had also been linked to Schlotterbeck in recent months, but Sport reports the club has ended its interest. Bayern Munich remains in pursuit, so the deal won't be easy.
Punchline 1: If Schlotterbeck signs, Real Madrid's defense will be so tight that even the offside line will have to file a formal complaint for harassment by contact.
Punchline 2: And if the deal stalls, at least the summer window will supply enough drama to power a season finale podcast.
