Marseille Shake-Up: Benatia's Role Expanded as Moroccan Plans Stall

Shocking turn reshapes Benatia's future
Mehdi Benatia, Marseille's sporting director, faces an unexpected turn that could block a move to the Atlas Lions' coaching staff.
On Monday, reports emerged that Benatia was a candidate to join Morocco's coaching staff in a new setup led by Tarik Skitioui.
Benatia had announced his resignation on February 9, just hours before the departure of manager Roberto De Zerbi, and he publicly confirmed the decision on Sunday via Instagram following Marseille's 2-2 draw with Strasbourg.
Nevertheless, owner Frank McCourt issued a formal statement confirming that Benatia will remain at least until the end of the season, with expanded authority over the club's sporting activities.
The move, in turn, is expected to curb the influence of club president Pablo Longoria.
McCourt added that the aim is institutional and sporting stability to reach the club's goals, notably qualification for the next Champions League.
McCourt personally sought to calm tensions inside the club, declaring that the team's ambition remains unchanged and urging everyone to rally behind Olympique de Marseille for a strong finish to the season.
Punchline 1: If Benatia's expanded role grows any more, Marseille might need a commission just to sign his emails.
Punchline 2: When leadership grows legs, even the club's Wi-Fi starts buffering with relief.
