Mbappé Breaks Silence on Caen Venture Collapse
Kylian Mbappé, Real Madrid’s star, has spoken out after facing sharp criticism over his foray into club ownership with Caen, the French club he bought in 2024. The move made him the youngest major owner in French football history, though the management installed drew widespread scrutiny.
Mbappé became owner of Caen in the 2024 summer, with Interconnected Ventures holding 80% and the former owner, Pierre-Antoine Capton, retaining 20%. The project, however, has not progressed as hoped, and the team recently relegated to the National 3 division in May. This week Caen announced staff cuts amid financial strain.
Spanish outlet AS reported that the 26-year-old Mbappé entered a heated exchange with French rapper Orelsan, a vocal Caen supporter, who attacked the France captain in a track titled La Petite Voix.
Orelsan’s critique prompted Mbappé to respond on social media with a playful dare to visit the city and a jab about the rapper’s supposed financial situation, suggesting he was only asking for a 1% share without paying a thing to look the part of the “good Norman boy.”
Caen currently sits tenth in the National division and aims to climb back toward promotion in the coming months, a tall order given the current climate.
On 25 September 2024 Mbappé formalized the Caen purchase, becoming the youngest owner in football history. Interconnected Ventures now owns 80% of the club, while Capton retains 20%. This marked Mbappé’s first foray into club ownership and a notable step in his evolving football empire.
Caen’s first signing under Mbappé’s project was French international Yann M’Vila, who recounted a conversation in which Mbappé called him with his mother present; the meeting led to an agreement, reflecting Mbappé’s hands-on approach to building the project around people he trusts.
Mbappé’s early life helped shape his career: born December 20, 1998, in Paris, with a Cameroonian father, Wilfried, who coached at a local club, and an Algerian mother, Fayza Lamari, a former handball player. This cultural blend contributed to the discipline and determination that define the forward today.
Now in his second season with Real Madrid, Mbappé leads the Spanish league scoring table with 13 goals after 11 rounds, following a remarkable previous season in which he claimed La Liga’s top scorer with 31 goals and won the European Golden Shoe. He collected the Golden Shoe again last Friday at the Bernabéu and reflected on his journey, saying he wants to continue writing history and thanking his teammates for helping him perform at his best.
"Playing for Real Madrid has been a childhood dream turned reality. I hope to stay here for many years to bring happiness to our fans who have shown me love since day one, even before I arrived."
Two punchlines to brighten the read: If Mbappé ever needs a bank loan, he can just ask Caen—they already know how to count on a defense that’s all about the loan sharking. And if ambition were a sniper’s rifle, Mbappé would be the guy who never misses the target, even when the target happens to be a promotion bid and a viral song clash at once.
