Mbappe-Style Freedom and Ancelotti’s Genius: Bale’s Real Madrid Revelations
9 March 2026
Inside Bale’s take on Alonso’s departure and Mbappe’s freedom
The Welsh star Gareth Bale offered his own interpretation of why Real Madrid dismissed former coach Xabi Alonso, saying the Spaniard did not fit the club’s character as he knew it, and nothing changed after Carlo Ancelotti left. The decision to sack Alonso sparked broad debate, especially since he left after fewer than eight months in charge, contrary to expectations.
In an appearance described by Bild via Sky Sports’ Stick to Football, Bale commented that the departure did not surprise him.
He added that Alonso should have adapted more to the desires and approach of some stars, notably Mbappe, granting them more freedom.
He explained that Mbappe and similar players prefer not to be confined to constant defensive duties and that a great coach should be a strong leader who unites the squad rather than just a tactical genius.
The idea, according to Bale, is simple: keep as many players in good condition as possible and let them do what they do best, even if some fans disagree with the approach.
Carlo Ancelotti’s genius
He praised Ancelotti as the best coach he has worked with, arguing that he is more than a manager, mastering tactical aspects and bringing people together. Wherever Carlo goes, Bale believes he will deliver great work, simply because he knows how to unite everyone and extract the best from players while keeping things straightforward.
Perez’s obsession
Bale also spoke about Real Madrid’s obsession with the Champions League and club president Florentino Perez, saying the team prioritizes the competition and that the president is always involved and hungry to leave a lasting legacy. That dedication, Bale argues, is what makes Perez one of the club’s defining presidents.
