Messi Breaks Records as Inter Miami Clinches Historic MLS Cup Victory
6 December 2025
Messi’s historic trophy haul reaches a new peak
Argentina's legend Lionel Messi, captain of Inter Miami, added to his historic trophy tally, cementing his status as football's most decorated winner.
Inter Miami clinched the MLS Cup for the first time in the club's history, defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 in the final on Saturday night.
Messi's total of 48 team trophies underscores his standing as the most decorated player on the global stage.
Inter Miami took the lead early, via an own goal by Eder Campo after eight minutes.
Vancouver equalised through Ali Ahmed in the 60th minute.
Messi then set up the second and third Inter Miami goals, finished by Rodrigo De Paul in the 71st minute and Tadio Alende in stoppage time (90+6).
Messi also edged ahead of Thomas Muller as the record holder for most trophies, as Inter Miami collected a third title following the 2023 Supporters' Shield and the 2024 Leagues Cup.
Punchline 1: If trophy-collecting were an Olympic sport, Messi would win gold every time.
Punchline 2: The MLS Cup just got Messi-sized—good luck finding a shelf that fits it all.
