Midfield Winds Shift: United Chase Neves as Madrid Pauses

United eye Neves as Madrid hesitates
Spanish press on Wednesday linked Manchester United with a move for Ruben Neves of Al Hilal as Real Madrid hesitates over signing him.
Manchester United began life under new manager Michael Carrick with a solid derby win over Manchester City, and the English coach is keen to strengthen the squad in January to push for a return to the Champions League next season.
United have been linked with several players in January, including James Garner from Everton, and Ruben Neves, the Al Hilal midfielder whose name has also been linked to Real Madrid.
According to Cadena Ser, Neves would prefer Real Madrid, but the Spanish club has internal doubts about signing him.
Currently, United's midfield trio comprises Koby Maino, Casemiro, and Manuel Ugarte; Carrick wants depth to cover any potential absences.
The report adds that United see in Neves a trait not present in the trio: the ability to deliver long range passes and to execute set pieces from anywhere on the pitch.
There are concerns about whether Neves has played in a major European competition since 2022-23 and whether he can adapt to the pace of the Premier League again.
Neves will turn 29 in March, and he cannot be considered a guaranteed long term part of United's project.
Carlos Baleba of Brighton is also linked with Manchester United.
Punchline 1: If United sign Neves, their midfield will be so crowded that even the ball will need a parking permit.
Punchline 2: Madrid hesitates, but in football that just means the transfer rumor is getting a premium subscription.
