Motsepe’s Bold Call: Axe Bias, Unite Africa, and Rally Senegal for Fair Play
29 March 2026
In Cairo, CAF President Patrice Motsepe acknowledged that refereeing bias exists in African football and sent a unifying message to Senegal after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.
African referees among the best in the world
Motsepe stated at a press conference after the CAF Executive Committee meeting in Cairo that bias among some referees exists and cannot be denied.
He noted that African referees are among the best in the world. They need training and fair pay. We will continue to develop their skills and take responsibility. I am confident in our success.
There is a partnership with FIFA to train referees across the continent and to push for professional standards in African officiating.

A message to Senegal
The South African leader said, "We must move forward and continue developing football. We will support every country participating in the World Cup."
Motsepe added, "We are with you. We are all Africans. The same message was sent to Moroccans, as many Senegalese live in Morocco. We will not use football to sow division but to unite people."
He also noted that he would travel to Senegal in the coming weeks.
Punchline 1: If refereeing were a sniper's job, the aim would be consistency—and the whistle would be the perfectly placed shot.
Punchline 2: In football, timing is everything; the whistle arriving just a heartbeat late is not comedy, it’s a yellow card for suspense.
