Opening win sets the Pharaohs on the right track
Egypt's under-17s began their FIFA World Cup campaign in Doha with a 4-1 victory over Haiti, starting Group 5 in Qatar’s 48-team tournament.
Egypt's scorers were Bilal Attia, Abdel Aziz Al-Zagbi, Hamza Abdul Karim and Omar Kamal, with Nikolai Pierre scoring Haiti's goal in the 20th minute. The win gives the Pharaohs three points as they gear up for their next group game.
What happened, and what's next
Under coach Ahmed Al-Kass, Egypt pressed from the opening whistle and led 2-1 at halftime after Attia and Al-Zagbi hit early goals and Haiti responded. Hamza Abdul Karim netted again and Omar Kamal added late to seal the four-goal win. A second-half moment, a late VAR review of a Haitian penalty, did not alter the result.
Next up for Egypt are Venezuela on Friday and England in the final group game, with the team hoping to build on their attacking rhythm that featured Attia and Karim.
