Preview: Al Ahly and Pyramids Chase CAF Final Glory
Mohamed Nagi 'Gedo', Pyramids' assistant coach, predicted Al Ahly would lift this season’s CAF Champions League, while Abdel Wahid El-Sayed, a former Zamalek goalkeeper, offered a contrary view.
Both clubs represent Egypt in the quarterfinals of the competition this season, joining six other Arab teams that advanced to this stage.
Today’s Cairo draw paired Al Ahly with Espérance Tunis, while Pyramids face AS FAR Rabat.
The draw suggests the two Egyptian teams would meet only in the final.
If Al Ahly reaches the semifinals, they would face the winner of Mamelodi Sundowns and Stade Malien.
Pyramids would play the winner of Al Hilal and AS FAR Rabat if they advance.
When asked about favorites, Gedo said that Al Ahly is the most decorated club, followed by Pyramids, then Al Hilal Sudan.
Speaking to MBC Masr 2, he added that Pyramids compete in every competition, topped their group, and boast strong attack and defense.
He noted that knockout rounds are different from group-stage matches in the Champions League.
Abdel Wahid El-Sayed, for his part, did not regard Al Ahly as the top favorite, saying, I would rate Pyramids first, then Al Ahly, then Sundowns.
