World Cup Stakes and Haaland's Shadow
Mohammad Shia al-Sudani, the Iraqi prime minister, warned about the danger posed by Norwegian striker Erling Haaland of Manchester City.
Iraq advanced to the 2026 World Cup finals after its hard-fought 2-1 victory over Bolivia.
Iraq joined Group 9 for the 2026 World Cup, which also includes France, Norway and Senegal.
The Iraqi prime minister’s office said on social media that al-Sudani hosted a luncheon for the Lions of Mesopotamia, celebrating their World Cup qualification.
After speaking with Iraqi players, the prime minister said, 'We want to prove, through our World Cup participation, that our qualification was earned'.
He added, 'Iraq’s group is tough, with France and Norway featuring Haaland and Senegal, but we trust the Lions of Mesopotamia to win'.
The remarks continued, 'Senegal is a strong side, not only in Africa but on the world stage'.
The Iraqi national team returns to the World Cup finals, after their sole appearance in 1986.
