Ramos's Bold 2026 Dream: A Monterrey Chapter Nearby Its End and a European Comeback?
28 November 2025
A World Cup dream shapes his next move
The veteran Spanish defender Sergio Ramos plans to end his Mexican adventure with Monterrey, just months after joining the club.
According to the Spanish show El Chiringuito, Ramos has decided to leave Monterrey once his contract expires in December.
Three stops, one veteran's mission
AS newspaper stated that the decision rests on two factors: family reasons and, surprisingly, a longing to play for Spain at the 2026 World Cup.
This comes despite Luis de la Fuente not calling up the veteran since he took charge of the national team a few years ago.
Ramos's last international appearance under coach Luis Enrique was in 2021.
He has not featured for Spain in the last three international tournaments, distancing him from De La Fuente's plans.
But that won't stop Ramos from thinking about a return to Europe, hoping to catch the eye of the Spain coach for the 2026 squad.
De la Fuente has a wealth of options at the back, with Din Huisin, Pau Cubarsi, Dani Vivian, Aymeric Laporte and Robin Le Normand.
Life after Madrid
Since leaving Real Madrid in 2021, Ramos has embarked on an unusual club odyssey, moving between three stops that stretch his career beyond two decades.
After leaving the club, he joined Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2021, where injuries hampered his early spell.
Yet in his second season he established himself at the heart of the defense, leveraging leadership and organization, before departing at the end of 2023.
In a sentimental move, Ramos then returned to Sevilla, his boyhood club, in a season that saw him compete fiercely despite advancing age.
Although he aimed to help Sevilla in La Liga, the club endured a turbulent season and could not offer a convincing project for the returning defender, ending the contract after just one season.
In September 2024, Ramos made a surprising move to Monterrey in a European exit of sorts.
Despite the oddity of the move, Monterrey gave him a fresh chance to keep competing and to lead a young squad that needed a strong presence.
The 39-year-old has started regularly since arriving, bringing defensive know-how and stabilizing the unit with his game-reading and guidance.
Punchline 1: If ambition were a passport, Ramos would need a new stamp every season.
Punchline 2: He’s chasing back to Europe like a boomerang wearing cleats.
