Record-Breaking 2025 Transfers: When the Fever Dream Met Reality
28 January 2026
Global Transfer Milestones 2025
Last year saw unprecedented numbers in the international transfer market, according to FIFA's global transfer report. A total of 86,158 international transfers were completed in 2025, the highest ever in football history.
Overall spending on transfer fees in men's professional football reached $13.08 billion, marking the peak level of expenditure in a single year.
In women's football, the market also grew, recording 2,440 international transfers, up 6.3% from 2024, with total spending at $28.6 million, more than 80% higher than the previous year.
England in the Spotlight
FIFA noted that English clubs dominated men's football, finishing first in spending with $3.82 billion and leading transfer-fee revenues at $1.77 billion.
The year's priciest deal saw Liverpool break Britain’s transfer record by signing Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for $172 million, the most expensive move of 2025.
Isak's move, however, has been seen as a flop by many fans so far, as the Swede has not reached his usual level with the Reds and suffered a serious injury requiring surgery in December/January, expected to sideline him until around April/May.
Isak’s situation serves as a light reminder that money on paper does not always translate into immediate on-pitch magic, especially when the squad’s health plays referee.
Two words for the season: gamble wisely, or you might need a bigger bank account and an even bigger pair of crutches.
