Derby Night: Madrid Edges Atléti After Red Card Incident
Real Madrid's Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde was sent off late in the Madrid derby against Atletico Madrid, casting a shadow over Madrid's 3-2 victory.
Vinícius Júnior led Madrid with a brace, scoring in the 52nd minute (from a penalty) and again in the 72nd, while Valverde had given Madrid an early lead in the 55th minute. Atletico answered through Ademola Lookman in the 33rd and Nahuel Molina in the 66th.
Madrid climbed to 69 points in second, four behind Barcelona, while Atletico stayed on 57 in fourth.
In the 77th minute, Valverde earned a straight red for a foul away from play, leaving Madrid a man down for the final stretch.
Marca noted Valverde's frustration about missing the late derby and the next match against Mallorca, though referee Montero's post-match report could raise the sanction.
Montero's report stated that in the 77th minute the player was sent off for coming from behind, not playing the ball, and using excessive force to bring down his opponent.
Under those terms, Valverde could miss two games: Mallorca in Round 30 and Girona at the Bernabéu in Round 31. Madrid intends to appeal once the final decision is published.
The match kept Madrid in the title race, but the red card will dominate conversations for days.
Punchlines: When derby drama writes your pension plan, you know the season is cooking. If there were an award for plot twists, this would win a hat trick and a red card. And yes, even VAR is begging for the encore: more drama, please, and maybe a shorter ban for the jokes.
