Rooney's Disclosure
Fans were stunned on a television show when Wayne Rooney opened up about a health issue.
The Manchester United legend revealed he is deaf in his left ear, offering little explanation for the condition.
He shared the admission during a segment of Match of the Day titled Behind the Scenes, saying the issue affects his match analysis.
Rooney, 40, had never spoken publicly about the hearing loss, and it remains unclear when or how it occurred.
The Backstory
The Daily Mail reported that during filming with the BBC crew, he asked to wear an earplug in his right ear instead of his left, and announced the condition.
Pointing to his stronger ear, he asked, "Could I do this in this ear?" and added, "I was turning off the answering machine... The problem is that I am deaf in my left ear."
He continued that when the sound is loud, he struggles to hear what host Kelly Kits or anyone else is saying.
It is not clear how the left-ear deafness happened, but Rooney needed 45 stitches in 2009 after sliding on a luxury yacht in the French Riviera.
Punchline: If Rooney’s left ear gets any quieter, he’ll start reading lips for MOTD—subtitle service, please. Punchline 2: In football, the loudest voice isn’t always the whistle; sometimes it’s the volume knob on Rooney’s headset.
