Salman Al-Faraj’s Comeback in Jeopardy: Medical Doubts Cast Shadow on Saudi Captain’s Return
30 March 2026
Injury update and future prospects
An alarming setback hits the Saudi captain.
Salman Al-Faraj, captain of the Saudi national team and NEOM midfielder, faces uncertainty about his future in the near term due to incomplete physical readiness, which raises concerns about his ability to return to regular duties for both club and country.
Al-Faraj suffered an ACL tear in late 2024 and was out for more than a year before coming back in the current season.
Strangely, the player does not seem to be back at his previous technical and physical levels, despite a lengthy recovery period.
Expert comments and implications
Dr. Rakan Al-Wabel, a Saudi sports medicine expert, said on a show that Salman Al-Faraj is not the same as before; he would have needed about nine months to return to normal, but he has passed that timeframe.
He added that Al-Faraj has been absent for more than 390 days, yet still appears technically and physically fragile, and he is reportedly training specifically with the Saudi national team, indicating he is not fully ready.
He also noted that if the situation stays as is, there could be a risk of another injury in the near future.
He concluded that the player's career may be nearing its end, as he has not shown the required level, especially since his position demands high physical readiness and sustained strength on the field.
And for a touch of levity: if comebacks were a league, he would be at the top, but with extra injury time that would stretch the league. If stand-up were a sport, knee jokes in his case might get a standing ovation.
