Second Strike, Bold Debut: Semenyo Channels Adebayor in City’s Quick Start
13 January 2026
Matchday Update
Semenyo scores his second goal in a Manchester City shirt.
Semenyo continues his standout start for Manchester City in his second consecutive match across all competitions.
The Ghanaian international started in City's starting XI against Newcastle United today, Tuesday, in the first leg of the English League Cup semi-final.
The new arrival managed to score City's opening goal in the 53rd minute, before netting a second ten minutes later with a superb volley, back to the goal, only for it to be ruled out.
Semenyo's second was ruled out after VAR review due to an offside on Haaland that impeded a defender from keeping the ball out.
Semenyo, who joined City in January, had scored his first goals in his first appearance against Exeter City in the FA Cup.
According to Opta, Semenyo is the first player to score in his first two appearances for Manchester City in all competitions since Emmanuel Adebayor in August 2009.
Meanwhile, SofaScore statistics show Semenyo sits third for goals across all competitions this season among Premier League players.
Having already bagged 12 goals this season, he trails Haaland (26) and Igor Tiago (17).
City fans stayed hopeful, despite VAR.
Punchline 1: Semenyo's precision is so sharp that even the net asked for his autograph.
Punchline 2: If this keeps up, City may stop signing strikers and start renting out a goal magnet instead.
