Slot's Philosophy: Fun First, Trophies Second
The Dutch coach Arne Slot, Liverpool's manager, believes that building an entertaining team is the most important achievement, and he intends to pursue that with the Reds.
Slot took charge of Liverpool at the start of last season, and in his first campaign at Anfield, he reportedly captured the Premier League title.
Slot said in remarks published on Liverpool's official website: "As a coach, you can win the league, you can win the Champions League, you can win the FA Cup or the League Cup, but the most important thing you can win is to play beautiful football for the spectators to watch."
He added: "Although fans may argue about this a bit at the moment, it is certainly a goal I pursue. I always want to dominate possession, I always want to be enthusiastic, and I want the fans to like what they see."
He continued: "This bothers me more than our results, more than our league position, that not all our fans enjoy watching our games at every moment. And the hardest thing is that I understand that, because I agree with them."
"Trophies are one thing, but to be a team or club that represents something, represents good football, I think that in the long run it deserves more than that."
Liverpool is obviously struggling this season, sitting sixth with 39 points, 14 points behind Arsenal.
Punchlines to close: 1) If football is art, Slot just handed us a masterpiece that still needs a few brushstrokes—and maybe a trophy case. 2) If beauty counted for points, Liverpool would be champions of the fashion week—passes look sharp, but the scoreboard could use a bit more gloss.
