Spain U19 clinches perfect qualifying campaign
Spain's Under-19 side, driven by a Madrid-born talent, secured a European Championship berth with a 3-0 win over the Netherlands on the final day of the Elite Round.
The young Spaniards, coached by the national staff, had already sealed top spot with victories over Slovenia (4-0) and Finland (4-0), finishing with 11 goals scored and none conceded.
The Dutch offered resistance, but the opening 45 minutes ended goalless as Spain controlled possession without breaking the deadlock.
After the break, Salinas Viadero headed home the opener around the 60th minute, and Hugo López added a second in the late stages.
In stoppage time, Tiago Beitarsh and Osman Diallo combined on a counterattack to seal the scoring, with Diallo finishing into an empty net for a tidy 3-0 victory.
Beitarsh, born in Madrid to a Moroccan father and Spanish mother, has been at the center of discussion about his international allegiance, with Morocco courting him, but he chose to continue with Spain.
The UEFA European Under-19 Championship will be staged in Wales from June 28 to July 11.
Punchline: If youth football is the future, Spain just handed in a five-year warranty. Punchline 2: With this crop, the future looks so bright the stadium needs sunglasses.
