Spanish Super Cup Schedule on the Move: February Kickoff Ahead
The potential shift in the Spanish Super Cup schedule could reshape hosting rights and prize money.

Schedule Shake-Up for the Spanish Super Cup

The Spanish Super Cup, currently broadcast exclusively through the Eight app—the carrier of the Roshn Saudi League—will not return to the first week of January next year, or at least not in that slot, after discussions with all clubs involved.

Realizing that the current date encroaches on the tail end of Christmas holidays, the competition is being moved to start in the first week of February from next year. Although this requires a calendar adjustment, all parties view it as a better fit than the current slot.

Hosting, Candidates and the Money Trail

According to Marca, next year’s edition is likely to be staged in Qatar, which is favored given Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the Asia Cup during those dates. The hosting auction remains open; while Saudi Arabia wants to extend the current deal, Qatar aims to present a strong bid for 2027 to secure the tournament.

The economic factor will drive the final decision. The Spanish federation reportedly sold the rights for about 6 million euros, up from roughly 3 million previously. As a result, clubs will receive larger shares: Athletic Bilbao about 1.8 million, Atletico Madrid about 2.8 million, and Real Madrid and Barcelona around 6 million each.

On the Copa del Rey final, scheduled for 25 April in Seville's La Cartuja stadium, the fate of the match now depends on Real Betis’s progress in the competition and in the Europa League, complicating the venue decision for that final.

And to end on a lighter note: If calendars were footballers, this one would be a striker who never misses a kick—except when the referee asks for a minute of extra time for a coffee break.

And a second punchline: If scheduling were an Olympic sport, this article would win gold for mid-season plot twists—and somehow still have time for a cameo by your calendar’s procrastination coach.
