Dueling Rosters Ahead of the Jeddah Derby
A sense of uncertainty hangs over German coach Matias Jaissle and Portuguese tactician Sergio Conceicao as the two leaders of Al Ahli and Al Ittihad prepare for the Jeddah derby in the Roshn Saudi League.
The match is set for Friday at the Al-Enma Stadium in Jeddah, a marquee clash in Round 25 of the competition.
Saudi outlet Al-Riyadiya reports that Jaissle and Conceicao have not yet settled on the final foreign player list for the derby, with each boss listing nine players initially and waiting for one to be cut.
Conceicao has named nine players for the match squad: Predrag Rajkovic, Danilo Pereira, and Mario Mitai in defense, joined by Fabinho, Mamadou Doumbia, Roger Fernandes, Houssam Aouar, Mousa Diaby, and Youssef N'Ssiri.
The list also includes two more notable names and tactical options that could influence the formation and balance of the team, underscoring the strategic complexity of this derby.
Jaissle, meanwhile, has seven foreign players already in mind: Senegalese Édouard Mendy, Brazilian Roger Ibanez, Ivorian Franck Kessié, French Valentin Attangana, Algerian Riyad Mahrez, Brazilian Galino, and Englishman Ivan Toney.
On the other hand, the German coach faces a dilemma about the eighth foreigner who might join the squad, between Brazilian Matheus Goncalves and French Enzo Milot.
The final decision is expected after the technical meeting, hours before kickoff on Friday at Al-Enmaa Stadium.
Kickoff details: 6 March 2026, 20:00 local time, Al-Enma Stadium, Jeddah, Roshn Saudi League.
Punchline time: If roster decisions were targets, these guys would be lighting up the scoreboard with headshots of paperwork. And if you think lineup decisions are easy, remember: even a chess grandmaster wouldn’t bench a knight just because the rook wore a nicer kit.
Punchline two: In football, the eight foreigners are less a squad and more a passport control desk—everyone wants a stamp, but only some get through before kickoff.
