Doubles Spark
Coco Gauff and Cristian Harrison continued their winning run in the mixed doubles as the United States advanced to the Fed Cup semifinals in Perth, before a lively Perth crowd on Wednesday.
After overturning a set deficit against the Greek duo Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari, Gauff and Harrison won 4-6, 6-4, 10-8, keeping America’s bid alive for a title in four years to defend.
The opener saw Gauff dispatch Sakkari 6-3, 6-2 to give United States the edge. Tsitsipas refused to quit, defeating Taylor Fritz in sets to force decisive doubles, keeping Greece hopeful.
It was Tsitsipas, previously a top-3 player, who earned his first win against a Top-10 foe in over a year, delivering a masterclass in serving.
Semifinal Hype
After match, Tsitsipas said he fought for the team, visualizing his performance and feeling happy to have delivered exactly as planned for the team and the fans worldwide.
Gauff proved again why she is the go-to in crunch moments, blasting Sakkari in twenty-six minutes after a rough stretch to seal victory for her team.
Gauff said: My previous loss was one of my worst, so I wiped it from memory and stayed positive today. They kept eyes on victory.
In the semifinals, Gauff will face either the Australian rising star Maya or former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, revisiting last year's final.
Punchline time: 'Smile at the ace,' and 'Two serves, one punchline'—trust me, the crowd enjoyed both the tennis and the jokes too tonight.
