When a Coach Leaves, Juventus’s Wallet Squeals: A €30 Million Wake-Up Call
Juventus faces mounting wage costs amid a coaching upheaval.

Financial shock after the coaching shake-up

According to an Italian report published on Tuesday, Juventus is staring down a hefty financial obligation following the dismissal of coaches Tiago Motta and Igor Tudor. Juventus officially announced Tudor's departure on Monday after a run of disappointing results, further heightening the uncertainty around the club's bench for the near future.

CalcioMercato reported that Juventus will bear nearly €30 million to cover the wages of Motta's and Tudor's staff under contracts through June 2027.

Specifically, the report states that Juventus earmarked €16.3 million to cover Motta's wage bill and staff through 2027, while Tudor's contract is estimated at around €3 million per year, totaling about €11 million, plus the coaching staff's costs. Combined, the total could exceed €27 million unless settlements are reached or the coaches sign with new clubs before the contracts expire.

Tudor had taken charge in March 2025, steering Juventus to qualification for the Champions League, but the club's downturn this season hastened his departure. Several outlets, including La Gazzetta dello Sport, indicated that the club favors Italian Luciano Spalletti as the preferred successor.

Spalletti, who previously led Napoli to the league title in 2023, has also coached Inter and Roma among others. The piece notes that Spalletti would bring experience, charisma, and leadership, but other options such as Roberto Mancini and Raffaele Baldini are also in contention should talks stall. If a deal with Spalletti is struck, it would mark his thirteenth managerial appointment in a long career.

On the pitch, Juventus has not fared well: eight winless games across all competitions, with losses to Lazio and Real Madrid and an exit from cup competition; a fourth straight match without a goal echoes their worst drought since March 1991 under Gianni Maifredi. The team sits eighth in Serie A with 12 points, six behind leaders Napoli and Roma.

Gianluigi Buffon, Juventus and Italy’s legendary goalkeeper, praised Spalletti as the right man for a big club chasing consistent ambition, citing his experience and charisma. Buffon also suggested Spalletti would be an excellent choice for Juventus, lamenting that the coach isn’t currently in the dugout in Turin.

Pulling the thread together, the club’s management is set to meet Spalletti to discuss a deal through the season with a view to extension if European qualification is secured. Buffon’s endorsement has added a note of optimism to a tense period for the Old Lady.

Punchlines: If Juventus's budget had a quote, it would say: Please, sir, I want some more — and the balance sheet would sigh. Also: the only thing heavier than Juventus's wage bill is the printer ink used to print this season’s budget.
