Tribute and Support for a Zamalek Legend
On Friday the board of Zamalek Sporting Club, led by Chairman Hussein Labib, announced urgent measures after the tragedy that claimed the life of former star Mohammed Sabry in a car accident in Cairo’s The Fifth Settlement.
The club declared a three day mourning period at the club premises to express deep sorrow and honor Sabry’s long service to the club and its fans.
An official funeral will be held on Sunday at the club’s premises so supporters and staff can bid farewell together.
In a gesture of appreciation for his long career the board decided to provide ongoing financial support to Sabry’s family including a fixed monthly pension and continued salary payments through the end of his contract with the club’s channel as a tribute to his media work after retirement.
The club stressed that these decisions reflect Sabry’s career and achievements as a player in the golden generation, a coach, and a sports analyst for the club’s channel.
Sabry’s Legacy On and Off the Pitch
Born in 1974 Sabry was one of the standout stars of the late 90s and early 2000s golden generation of Zamalek. He joined the first team in 1993, playing as a midfielder and attacker, known for his dribbling and technical ability that helped the club win many titles.
During his time at Zamalek he collected 15 trophies including the Egyptian Premier League twice, the Egyptian Cup twice, and the Egyptian Super Cup three times, along with continental honours such as three CAF Champions League titles, one African Cup Winners Cup, three CAF Super Cups, and one Afro Asian Cup.
He shared the pitch with notable teammates and became a symbol of loyalty and professionalism. After a brief spell with Kazma SC in Kuwait he returned to Egypt to play for Al Ittihad SC before retiring and turning to coaching and talent scouting, including discovering Mustafa Fathy.
In recent years Sabry worked as a TV host and sports analyst for Zamalek channel, earning respect for his blend of club loyalty and professionalism and for defending the club without disparaging rivals.
Driven by unwavering loyalty to the white castle the story continues with the legends enduring influence on the club’s culture.
Details of his death show that he died in the early hours after his car hit a wall at a building site in The Fifth Settlement. The news sent shock through the Egyptian sports world as the club mourned a beloved figure and fans paid respects.
Reactions from the sports community include statements from Nira Al Ahmadi, Hazem Imam, Shikabala and Gamal Hamza praising his loyalty and impact on and off the field.
Mohammed Sabry will be remembered as a symbol of devotion to Zamalek, both as a player and as a mentor and broadcaster for the club.
Punchline time: even in mourning Zamalek still shows how to score laughs per minute, a true master of the final pass. And if life is a football match, Sabry surely had the best assists in this league of memories.
