Contract renewal anchors Barca's midfield plan
Barcelona announced that Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong has signed a new contract through June 30, 2029. The deal includes a 500 million euro release clause, up from the previous figure, and places the player's salary in the same bracket as Pedri and Rafinha.
De Jong had been among Barca's top earners due to wage deferrals made in 2020 during the presidency of Josep Maria Bartomeu.
Negotiation, agents, and leadership
According to AS, the renewal had been in the works for several months. During Barca's August tour of Japan and South Korea, De Jong expressed optimism about smooth negotiations.
The process accelerated after the player changed agents, moving from his longtime representative Ali Dursun to a legal team led by Sebastiaan Ledur and Wouter Janssen. The management under Deco, head coach Hansi Flick, and president Joan Laporta have long admired De Jong, despite past tensions that brought talk of court action during the COVID period.
Future at Barca and the broader project
Despite interest from Manchester United in 2022, De Jong remained committed to Barca and helped the club to a treble after regaining fitness. He joined Barcelona in 2019 from Ajax for 75 million euros plus 11 million in incentives, in a deal Barca battled PSG and Manchester City over.
With the renewal, the 28-year-old becomes a central figure in the club's long-term plan alongside Pedri, Gavi, Lamine Yamal, and Araújo, aiming for sustained domestic and European competitiveness. De Jong hopes the extension marks a new phase in his career at the Blaugrana, where he has grown into a leader and stabiliser in midfield.
