Egypt Impresses Despite Adversity
Ibrahim Hassan, head coach of the Egypt national team, discussed the behind-the-scenes of the goalless draw with Spain, insisting the Pharaohs delivered a strong performance despite tough conditions.
The game ended scoreless in Barcelona, following Egypt’s recent, impressive 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in Jeddah this season.
Speaking on ON Sport, Hassan said the coaching staff, led by Hossam Hassan, studies opponents carefully, and that Egypt built on positives from the latest training camp, which showed in their composed display.
He added that preparations for the Saudi and Spain matches were far from easy, with lodging changes and Spain’s postponements, until it was finally scheduled at the last moment, putting extra pressure on the squad amid two demanding trips.
Arab Standouts and Spain’s Crowd Response
Hassan also stressed that Egypt stands above all Arab teams, noting that rivals are determined to claim a positive result against them.
Egypt sits 29th in FIFA’s latest rankings, ranking third among Arab nations after Morocco in eighth and Algeria in 28.
Hassan also revealed negotiations for strong friendlies, saying there was a plan to face Argentina that nearly came off, then Spain was arranged, even though it was to be played outside Egypt.
He closed by lamenting Spain’s behavior, saying the booing during the Egyptian anthem was painful, yet the players answered with a display, and he urged respect for all nations’ flags and anthems.
Punchline: If football were chess, Egypt just promoted a rook. Spain's fans learned that a friendly can still bite back tonight, anyway.
