Hakimi in the Spotlight, Rekraki's Calm Strategy: Morocco’s AFCON 2025 Roadmap Unveiled
28 December 2025
Rest, unity, and the family spine of the team
Morocco head coach Walid Rekraki signaled he could rest several players for Monday's Group C fixture against Zambia, as the team eyes a path to the knockout stage of AFCON 2025. He spoke about the need to manage fatigue and the broader goal of keeping everyone ready for what lies ahead.
During the pre-match press conference, he said: "I have great confidence in the squad; we are one family, and we know what we want to deliver for Moroccan football. We know we will face difficulties, players are tired and under pressure, and we must consider resting some of them; everyone can play and perform different roles."
On shooting from outside the box, he added: "We don't shoot enough from outside the area, but we shouldn't shoot just for the sake of shooting. I do not ban players from taking shots at goal, and it's one of the points we are working on."
Hakimi's role under the microscope
Asked about the role of star Ashraf Hakimi and whether he will feature against Zambia after his recent injury, Rekraki replied: "He is the best player in Africa, and one of the best players in the world, but we have others who can replace him. Hakimi leads and fulfills his duties perfectly, but we do not know if he will start tomorrow."
He continued: "This team isn't run only by the coach; players, the media, and the fans all share in the leadership. We have a family spirit, and when I leave, they will carry this message to the younger players."
He added: "Anything remains possible regarding Hakimi or others in the right-back position. Several players can fill that role; Mazraoui did well, and we'll adapt to the opponent. All players share the same spirit."
Fans, critics, and a calm road forward
Responding to criticism after the 1-1 draw with Mali, Rekraki said: "Since I was a player and an assistant coach, I have kept calm because I know the Moroccan atmosphere well. I told the players that 95% of Moroccans love them and 5% criticize—if fans aren't happy, that's fine, because we are a big football nation, and we must push forward. It doesn't worry me; I am sure they support us. We stay calm and accept both love and anger from the fans."
And for a light note to close, a couple of snappy quips: if calm were a weapon, this team would be a sniper’s dream; and if patience were gold, these players are minting it. Also, remember: the only thing sharper than Hakimi's crosses is our editor’s sense of humor.
