What happened
Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim stepped away from Cruzeiro after ten months in charge to protect his physical and mental health, he announced at a press conference.
The club, based in Belo Horizonte, announced that Jardim would not stay on for the 2026 season, departing with his assistants.
At 51, Jardim had a deal for another season with an extension option; he previously led Monaco to the 2017 Ligue 1 crown and has faced health issues affecting someone close.
He explained the reasons were personal, citing ‘warning signs’ that pushed him to prioritize his health.
What comes next
The move followed Cruzeiro's elimination by Corinthians in the Brazil Cup semi-finals.
Jardim had succeeded Fernando Diniz, Brazil's interim coach in 2023, at Cruzeiro; media expect Tite to take over.
The Portuguese coach previously led Al Hilal to AFC Champions League glory and also coached Shabab Al-Ahli, Al Ain and Monaco, among others.
Punchlines: Health is wealth, even in football. Guess wellness just landed Jardim a longer contract with his own peace of mind.
