One Mistake, Ten Defenders: Umtiti Fires Back at Mbappé’s Center-Back Claim

Defender’s Reality Check
In a widely debated statement within French football circles, Samuel Umtiti, the former Barcelona defender, rejected what his countryman Kylian Mbappé, Real Madrid’s star, recently said.
Mbappé had raised the issue in a joint interview with Achraf Hakimi, arguing that the center-back position is among the easiest in football, saying the team could win without a forward or even without a defender, and even without a goalkeeper, but 'without a strong midfield, the team has no balance'.
Addressing the difficulty of the roles Mbappé mentioned, Umtiti insisted that playing as a defender is far from the easy stereotype.

In a recent quote, Mbappé said, 'I don’t understand why he said that; Kylian knows that well; I’ll talk to him about it.'
Umtiti, in a firm defensive tone, added: 'This is what defenders often say; in defense, it’s a different matter; one mistake costs you, so it’s not necessarily an easier position.'
The former Barcelona and France defender, World Cup winner in 2018 with Mbappé, noted: 'Playing with three defenders can give you more security, but you still defend; if you lose a one-on-one, the attacker might break through and the match ends.'
He observed that defenders cover fewer meters than attackers, but stressed the psychological and mental strain of the role, explaining: 'When you finish a game as a defender, you have a headache; you must stay focused far more than attackers, who can make ten mistakes without big consequences.'
He closed by urging respect for all positions: 'We should not claim one position is easier than another; every position matters greatly.'
Punchline: If defending is so easy, try it in a match where the opponents forgot their boots. And if Mbappé keeps debating midfield balance, perhaps he should balance his own haircut.
