One Subtle Switch Shapes Arsenal’s Start Against Fulham
18 October 2025
Lineup and key updates
Arsenal’s head coach Mikel Arteta announced the starting XI for the Premier League clash with Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday in London.
The attack featured a familiar forward line: Ezi, Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard, and Victor Giocieres, backing a back four that included Raya, Timber, Gabriel Magalhães and William Saliba, with Riccardo Calafiori at left-back and Martin Zubimendi anchoring the midfield along with Declan Rice and Ezi on the flanks.
Compared to the last match against West Ham, the only alteration is the absence of captain Martin Odegaard due to injury, with Zubimendi stepping in to fill the midfielder’s role.
Arsenal sit atop the Premier League table with 16 points, while Fulham occupy 14th with 8 points ahead of kick-off.
Lineups
Arsenal: David Raya - Jurrien Timber - Gabriel Magalhaes - William Saliba - Riccardo Calafiori - Martin Zubimendi - Declan Rice - Ezi - Leandro Trossard - Bukayo Saka - Victor Giocieres.
Fulham: Leno - Castagne - Andersen - Cuenca - Sesinon - Berji - Kearny - Wilson - King - Ayoebi - Jimenez.
Odegaard sidelined
Arteta spoke at length about Odegaard’s injury: “He’ll be out for several weeks, and there isn’t a precise return date yet, but he’s recovering well.”
The manager added, “What’s happening with Odegaard this season is unfortunate due to repeated injuries, but I believe he’ll bounce back in coming weeks. We’ll monitor his rehabilitation closely and it’s too early to set a precise return date.”
On the captain’s mentality, Arteta said: “He’s in good spirits despite the frustration. He does everything to avoid injuries, but some knocks are almost unavoidable. It eases the pressure a bit.”
“He can’t be negative; he’s the leader and must set standards, be a role model, and bring positive energy.”
“It’s his responsibility, just like a parent’s toward their children. He must always be present—tired or rested, happy or sad.”
Havertz nearing a return
Arteta also provided an update on Kai Havertz: “Havertz is in the final phase of knee rehab and could return earlier than expected. There is still a lot of rehab ahead, but he’s pushing hard. We love Kai, but he often tries to beat the schedule. We must protect him and ensure he’s ready for the long term.”
Regarding Martin Zubimendi’s recent rest, Arteta explained: “Zubi had extra downtime after a heavy load, and he’ll be ready for today’s match.” He also noted Ben White’s preload and Noni Madueke’s proximity to a return, with running work starting soon.
Defensive progress praised
On the team’s form, Arteta commented: “We’ve seen many positives. We’ve faced issues that forced us to increase squad readiness and have improved in several areas, including more attacking threat and greater defensive consistency. We’ve reached a new level, and the goal is to maintain and raise it.”
Speaking about the defense, he added: “Conceding only three goals in ten matches is the foundation of our results and performance. We want to preserve that level consistently.”
He continued: “Good defense starts with the way we attack and everyone’s discipline. If we keep that up, we have a great chance to reach our targets.”
Martinelli’s Brazil form during the international window was also highlighted: “Gabriel Martinelli is delivering what we expect from everyone—minutes, impact in results, and a positive attitude that boosts confidence when he returns.”
As for Piero Hincapié, Arteta praised his aggression and desire: “What you’ll notice is his tenacity and intensity; he gives maximum effort in every tackle, especially in defense.”
He added that on the ball, Hincapié can operate as a left centre-back or right-back, offering a different character and energy to the side.
Overall, Arteta stressed that Arsenal’s approach remains forward-thinking and cohesive, with a focus on maintaining solidity at the back while continuing to improve in attack.
Punchlines
Punchline 1: If Arsenal’s lineup stays this tight, even their coffee will start playing like a well-drilled midfielder—all espresso and tempo.
Punchline 2: Odegaard may be out, but the captaincy remains in good hands; let’s hope the knee rehab is as speedy as our internet connection on game day—glimpses of glory, permanent buffering not included.
