Morocco reach AFCON 2025 final after dramatic penalties
Achraf Hakimi, the Paris Saint-Germain star, couldn't hold back his emotions after Morocco booked a place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final. Morocco overcame Nigeria in the semi-final on penalties at Moulay Abdellah Stadium, following a goalless draw in regular and extra time.
After the shootout, the Atlas Lions advanced to the final, and tears of joy flowed from their captain as teammate Ibrahim Diaz of Real Madrid hugged him on air to calm him down.
Hakimi later spoke in a press conference in the presence of Morocco legend Jaouad Zaïri, who kissed the PSG star on the head live on air. Hakimi expressed pride in the tradition of Moroccan football and the duty to carry the work forward.
Hakimi did not play in Morocco's first two AFCON matches, came on as a substitute in the third match against Zambia, and then started every subsequent game. Earlier doubts about his participation followed a serious injury in a Bayern Munich Champions League clash last November. Morocco now prepares to face Senegal in the final on Sunday.
Looking ahead to the final
Morocco aims to seal a historic continental title in front of a home crowd, building on a remarkable tournament run. The final against Senegal poses a formidable test, but the Atlas Lions arrive with confidence and momentum.
Punchline 1: If tears counted as goals, Hakimi would be the season's top scorer.
Punchline 2: The final is so big that even my jokes are taking a seat in the front row.
