Ahead of the Flamengo clash
The Croatian coach Krunoslav Yurčić says all players are fully prepared for Flamengo as Pyramids FC head into the Club World Cup semi-final in Qatar. He highlights the squad’s motivation and the importance of maintaining focus, even when facing a historically formidable opponent.
Flamengo reached the last four by beating Cruz Azul 2-1, while Pyramids advanced after eliminating Auckland City 3-0 in Cairo and then defeating Al-Ahli Saudi 3-1 in Jeddah to secure their semi-final spot.
Experience, pressure, and the plan
Yurčić acknowledged that his group has limited exposure to major international tournaments, but pointed to significant African encounters as preparation for this new challenge. He called for calm, discipline, and precise execution to avoid costly mistakes, warning that Flamengo will punish any lapse.
“We aim to leave a good impression. The preparation for these games isn’t hard because the players are eager to give their best, and we simply need to stay calm and implement the tactical plan,” he said.
He stressed that big games demand concentration and quality, given Flamengo’s history and depth of talent, which can exploit even a small error.
“One veteran coach told me early in my career that the next match is the only one that matters. So we don’t think about a potential PSG meeting if we win; our attention is on Flamengo,” he insisted.
Yurčić also confirmed that Walid Kariti will miss the match after representing Morocco in the Arab Cup, describing the situation as frustrating and questioning the level of support from the federations involved.
At the end of the conference, he addressed Egyptian fans in Qatar: “We want to see strong Egyptian support. Pyramids represents Egypt and its football, and our club’s name draws on one of our country’s iconic symbols—the Pyramids of Giza.”
Respect for Flamengo and the road ahead
The coach reiterated that Flamengo is a formidable opponent with experienced players, yet he remains proud to face a historic club and to add a new chapter to Pyramids’ history. He underscored his preference for a high-pressing style and long-term commitment from his players, saying, “That’s my approach, and it requires every player’s discipline.”
Yurčić emphasised that Flamengo’s European-experienced stars will test his side, but he believes his players—seasoned by tough African battles—can rise to the occasion and seize the moment in this prestigious intercontinental showdown.
Two punchlines to end on a lighter note:
“If strategy were a snack, this team would be a cheese board—lots of options, and somehow we still want more.”
“If you hear a camel in the stands, don’t worry—it's just the defense hyping up the pyramid turnout.”
