Flamengo clinches Brazilian Serie A after Libertadores glory

Flamengo secured the Brazilian Serie A title by defeating Ceara 1-0 at the Maracanã, with winger Samuel Lino scoring the decisive goal. The win came just four days after Flamengo claimed their fourth Copa Libertadores crown, beating their compatriots Palmeiras to seal a domestic–continental double this season.

Flamengo’s points tally rose to 78, extending their lead over Palmeiras to five points with one round remaining in the campaign.

This is Flamengo’s eighth Brazilian league title, tying them with Santos for second-most in the competition’s history, while Palmeiras remains the leader with 12 titles.

Only Santos in 1962-63, Flamengo in 2019, and Botafogo in 2024 have managed the domestic-and-continental double in a single season.

Flamengo have also become the first Brazilian club to win four Copa Libertadores titles, a record-equalling feat with Europe’s champions.

The club’s coach Filipe Luís, speaking at a press conference, spoke of “great pride” and said: “In a few years, the players will understand what they’ve achieved. They are eternal.”

At the packed Maracanã, Flamengo fans displayed a large banner reading “Kings of the Cups” to celebrate the new trophy.

Lino, 25, who joined Flamengo from Atlético Madrid for a club-record 31.6 million euros this season, netted the winner in the 38th minute after a through ball from Colombian Jorge Carrascal.

Lino added: “This shows my resilience. I fight all the time, not only in this match but in my career and daily life.”

“Scoring the title-winning goal makes me happy,” he said.

Palmeiras’ 3-0 win over Atlético Mineiro did not prevent Flamengo’s triumph, with Abel Ferreira congratulating the winners: “A wonderful group and a great coach.”

The Flamengo campaign isn’t finished yet, as they head into the Intercontinental Cup clash with Cruz Azul of Mexico, the CONCACAF champions, on Wednesday. The final against Paris Saint‑Germain, Europe’s champions, is slated for December 17 in Doha.

When the dust settles, Flamengo will either lift another trophy or head home to start planning for the next season—either way, the trophies aren’t getting offended by interruption.
