Match Recap
Villarreal climbed to second place in La Liga after a convincing 4-0 win at home against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, in matchday 11.
The Yellow Submarine moved to 23 points, one point ahead of defending champions Barcelona, who host Elche on Sunday.
At La Ceramica, the hosts opened the scoring in the first half through a veteran striker, and then pulled away with a rapid second-half burst that included three goals between the 57th and 65th minutes.
The scorer of the first goal and the trio that followed helped Villarreal seal a comfortable victory.
“I’m gradually finding my form,” said the man of the match, adding that his teammates make things easier and that adapting at the start was a bit tough.
“We knew we could move up to second, and we must stay focused on our next match,” he added.
Villarreal moved four points behind Real Madrid, who lead the table and were set to host Valencia later, chasing a tenth win in 11 league games; Madrid's only league defeat this season came in a heavy 2-5 loss to Atlético Madrid.
Atlético Madrid extended their league unbeaten run to 10 games with a 3-0 win over Sevilla, with goals from two Argentinians and a French substitute.
Koke, the Atlético captain, said the team delivered a superb performance in the last three games, and that keeping a clean sheet is crucial and part of their identity that will help them compete for major titles.
Coach Diego Simeone did not make significant changes to his lineup after their 4-0 loss to Arsenal in the Champions League, instead naming a familiar attacking trio.
The tactical duel featured dangerous runs from the visitors, and Atlético preserved the shutout with disciplined defending and timely interventions.
Atlético's win moved them to 22 points in fourth place, while Sevilla remained on 13 points in 11th.
Since their early-season loss to Espanyol, Atlético have recorded six wins, including a big win over their city rival Real Madrid, alongside four draws, and have kept a clean sheet in their third straight league match.
Koke described the team as having delivered a great performance in the last three matches.
“We’ve kept clean sheets, which is crucial and part of our identity that will help us compete for major titles.”
In a tactical note, Simeone did not overhaul his lineup after the heavy Champions League defeat, reinforcing a steady approach ahead of upcoming fixtures.
As the league table takes shape, the results underline a tight race at the top and a crowded mid-table battle.
