Montpellier Mourns a Touchline Legend: The Jean-Louis Gasset Era
26 December 2025
Obituary
Montpellier Hérault SC announced the death of Jean-Louis Gasset, who steered the club as coach on three occasions, the latest from October 2024 to April 2025, at the age of 72. He first wore Montpellier colors as a player between 1975 and 1985, before returning to manage the side in 1998–1999.
The club's statement expressed deep sadness, recalling his professionalism, kindness, and passion for the game and noting that he left a lasting imprint on the club and its supporters. It also highlighted his distinctive voice and warm smile that fans remember fondly.
It extended condolences to his family, especially to his son Robin, now an assistant to Zoumana Camara, his daughter Coralie, his mother Éliane, and the entire Gasset family.
Gasset's coaching career spanned several clubs, including Saint-Etienne (2017–2019), Bordeaux (2020–2021), and Marseille (Feb–May 2024), along with two other Montpellier spells (Jan–May 2017 and Oct 2024–Apr 2025) and leading the Ivory Coast national team from 2022 to 2024.
He also served as an assistant to Laurent Blanc with the France national team (2010–2012) and Paris Saint-Germain (2013–2016). The partnership with Blanc began at Bordeaux, during a period when the club achieved a domestic treble in 2009.
Legacy
Gasset left a mark with his professionalism and calm presence on the touchline, earning his place among Montpellier's most respected figures. His memory lives on in the club's history and in the many players and staff who crossed his path.
As the club mourns, fans recall his warmth and sharp mind that inspired generations to give their best on the pitch. Montpellier extends its condolences to the Gasset family and all who knew him.
Punchlines: If leadership on the sideline counted as goals, Gasset would have won the league with his sheer presence alone. And if wit were trophies, he would have an extra shelf in the club’s trophy cabinet.
