Egypt Names Surprising XI for Zimbabwe Showdown
Hossam Hassan, Egypt's head coach, unveiled the Pharaohs' starting XI for tonight's clash with Zimbabwe in the opening round of Africa Cup of Nations 2024 in Morocco.
The squad included several surprises, notably Imam Ashour of Al Ahly returning to midfield after a lengthy layoff, and Hesam Abdel-Majid stepping into defense ahead of Ramy Rabia.
Hassan also kept Ahmed Mustafa Zizo on the bench, with Nantes striker Mustafa Mohamed starting upfront, while Salah and Omar Marmoush were favored to lead the attack.
The starting XI features Mohamed El-Shenawy in goal; defensive line Mohamed Hany, Yasser Ibrahim, Hesam Abdel-Majid and Mohamed Hamdi; midfield three Marwan Attia, Hamdi Fathy, Imam Ashour; attacking trio Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet, Omar Marmoush and Mohamed Salah.
A reminder that the players will aim to kick off with confidence and a dash of flair.
Punchline 1: If this defense stays tight, Zimbabwe will need a passport to cross the Egyptian half.
Punchline 2: Salah scores, and even the referee asks for an autograph.
