The World-nicknamed Al-Nassr dreams of lifting AFC Champions League 2 for the first time in its history.
Shocking AFC scheduling reshapes the Al-Nassr–Al-Wasl clash
The Asian Football Confederation stunned Al-Nassr with a surprising move ahead of their eagerly awaited clash with Al-Wasl in the AFC Champions League 2. The plan had originally called for quarterfinals to be played as home-and-away ties, with the first leg in early March and the second leg a week later.
Subsequently, the AFC announced that the remaining quarterfinals and the semifinals would be staged in the Western region as single-leg ties, reversing the traditional two-match format and prioritizing a centralized format.
The matches will be staged at Zabeel Stadium in Dubai, the venue associated with Al-Wasl’s quarterfinal involvement in this phase of the competition.
Al-Nassr will meet Al-Wasl on Sunday, April 19, with the winners advancing to the semifinals on April 22. All these matches will be played at the same venue, keeping the Dubai stage as the hub for this round.
The final is scheduled for May 16, with kickoff time and exact venue to be announced later by the organizers.
According to Al Sharq Al-Awsat, the reason for hosting in Dubai is practical: Saudi Arabia is already hosting the final rounds of Asia’s Elite competition in Jeddah, so spreading games elsewhere helps diversify host locations.
The AFC reportedly declined requests from Al Nassr and the Saudi federation to host the final rounds of Asia 2, opting instead to broaden hosting options across the continent.
A Saudi journalist, Ali Al-Anzi, claimed on social media that the final could be played at Al-Ol Park if Al-Nassr reaches that stage, a rumor that has fans speculating about a potential twist in the saga.
Punchline 1: If football had a navigation app, AFC would simply say, Recalculating… Dubai in 5 seconds.
Punchline 2: Al-Nassr’s plan this week—park the bus, then fly the bus to Dubai for the match. Talk about multi-modal football planning!
