Return of the Gulf Champions League after a brief pause
The Gulf Championship resumes after a brief pause.
Football's Gulf Cup Association announced the Gulf Champions League will resume soon, following its recent pause for fans worldwide.
Semifinals were initially scheduled in a home-and-away format on March 3, 4, 10, and 11, but they were postponed due to Iranian strikes on some Arab states, amid regional tensions and uncertainty.
An official statement on X confirmed the resumption would occur, but with a different format. The governing body emphasized adjustments aim to safeguard players, officials, and fans alike.
Matches will be played as single-leg semifinals, instead of two-legged ties, scheduled for April 19, with the final set for April 23. Organizers hope the change speeds up the crown quest.
Gulf's federation followed Asia's lead, deciding to restart both Asia competitions with one-off matches instead of home-and-away rounds, a move seen as simplifying calendars and boosting drama.
Qualified clubs were invited to bid for hosting the final rounds, based on the approved criteria set by the organizers.
Al-Qadsia of Kuwait faces Al-Rayyan of Qatar, while Al-Shabab of Saudi meets Zakho of Iraq in semifinals, with winners meeting in final.
The trophy's so used to travelling it now has its own visa.
If drama paid admission, these semifinals would be sold out in a heartbeat.
